Hugh Hefner is a legend and an American Icon. Founder and owner of the Hugh Playboy Enterprise Hefner owned a lifestyle magazine empire, a mansion, multiple real estates and is famous for quite a few things.
We all know about his infamous Playboy mansion littered with some of the most beautiful women from around the world just casually walking around and it’s infamous grotto. He’s also known for his iconic look of a smokers robe for which it is claimed he has up to 200 custom made robes in different colours.
He is also widely recognised for his smokers pipe and sailors hat as well as the army of women which often accompanied him wherever he went but we’re not here to talk about the things we do know about Hugh Hefner. We thought it would be fun to go through a short-list of fun facts you probably didn’t know about the magazine icon before.
So without further a due, let’s start with the first fact:
Hugh Hefner has always had some sort of link to Maralyn Monroe and was known to have somewhat of an infatuation with her which could have just been his own crush or perhaps something more sentimental considering her impact on Playboy.
When Playboy first appeared and the first issue of the magazine was released it featured Maralyn Monroe on the cover and nude inside the magazine. Hefner purchased the pictures for $200 from a photographer who managed to get Maralyn Monroe to pose nude for a mere $50 when she was a struggling actress.
Hefner later went on to purchase a burial plot for $75,000 right next to the icon’s body so he could be buried with her, which is where he is currently laid to rest.
Ears To You
The bunny is an icon to Playboy. The main insignia for the company’s brand is a side silhouette shot of a rabbits head and the Playboy girls often referred to as ‘Playmates’ tend to dress in the classic bunny attire Playboy has made iconic.
All Playboy Clubs such as the one in London feature staff in the bunny attire and it has become a clear staple of the company. Hugh Hefner chose the bunny for a number of reasons. One of the reasons was to pay homage to the ‘Bunny Tavern’ in Illinois which Hefner often drank at.
The other reasons were as Hefner stated himself ‘The bunny, in America, has a sexual meaning: and I chose it because it’s a fresh animal, shy, vivacious, jumping, sexy’ he was also quoted saying he chose a rabbit because they enjoy having a lot of sex. Whatever his reason it is undeniable that the bunny is forever linked with Playboy now and as a homage to Hugh Hefner an endangered species of Marsh Rabbit was named after him with its proper title being the ‘Sylvilagus Palustris Hefner’.
When Life Gives You Lemons
Hugh Hefner was stated saying he has slept with roughly around 2000 women but surprisingly to some Hugh wasn’t always the iconic Playboy the world came to know and love. Hugh was a very monogamous person and didn’t lose his virginity until he was 22 as he wanted to wait for marriage to have sex.
After his brief stint serving in World War 2, Hugh’s wife at the time confessed she had cheated on him while he was away. Hefner recalled this as one of the most devastating moments of his life. Although he stayed with her for ten more years and had two children Hugh went on to marry 2 more times marrying Playmate of the year ‘Kimberly Conrad’ in 1989.
The couple had two children together and an age gap of 36 years. They later divorced in 2010 and Hefner went on to marry his third and last wife ‘Crystal Harris’ in 2012. The couple had a 60 year age gap.
